The American School of Lyon provides an English-language curriculum
based on the American model of education. The school offers instruction
with an international scope rooted firmly in the historic, biblical
Christianity that is the foundation of Western culture. It seeks to
give every student the tools to think creatively and effectively and
the ability to understand themselves and the complex world around
them.
The American School of Lyon's classical approach applies teaching
methods that fit students developmental stages of learning.
Young children are taught basic skills and facts while older students
develop critical thinking, writing, and speaking abilities. The
curriculum uses the great literature and classics of the past to
help students grasp the events of the present. French is taught
at all levels, and all students pursue physical education, music,
and other creative arts. In addition, English as a Second Language
courses are available for students whose first language is not English.
A low student-teacher ratio promotes individual and caring attention
for the needs of each student. Students with special needs are accepted
when possible.
As the foundation of Western civilization, Christianity is an integral
part of the curriculum at The American School of Lyon. The history
and content of the Bible are rationally taught so that the truths
each student holds about God are his or her own. The goal is that
each student be able to recognize and evaluate truth, goodness,
and beauty from a Christian worldview, regardless of his or her
personal faith. Respect is taught for all people, principle-based
ethics, and the importance of understanding different worldviews.
Upon graduation from The American School of Lyon, students receive
an American diploma that satisfies all requirements for a US high
school diploma and is recognized by the US government, the National
Council for Private School Accreditation, and Middle States Association
of Colleges and Schools. The school is currently developing Advanced
Placement (AP) courses for English Literature, American Government,
calculus, and biology. Qualified students may earn an Advanced Placement
International Diploma that is recognized by a number of European
and British Universities.
The American School of Lyon is located on a 2.5-acre campus in
a 4,500-square-meter building. It contains purpose-built science
labs, as well as computer labs for the elementary and upper schools.
